about

100% of Bandcamp sales for this album will be donated to Arte Para Todos.

For Milwaukee’s Paper Holland, 2018 was their most productive year yet, due in no small part to the release of the band’s sophomore album Galápagos. Appearances at nearly every Milwaukee festival along with countless club dates both locally and in the Midwest saw the band expanding their reach considerably. Most acts would use this as an opportunity to take a break and regroup, but Paper Holland decided to wrap up the album cycle with a thank you to all who supported them in the last year-a limited vinyl release of Galápagos as well as Galápados, a companion album featuring cover versions by some of Milwaukee’s finest acts.

Milwaukee Record’s Local Coverage event was a large contributing factor in the album’s existence, and those who attended may recall folk duo Nickel and Rose’s gorgeous renditions of Paper Holland’s work, presenting them in their most stripped down form. Months later, the band was called back along with 11 other acts to reimagine the album in its entirety. The band chose artists’ who’s work they respect, be it acts whom they’ve shared the stage with over the years, or up and comers the band has recently met.

The lineup of contributors to Galápados reflects an incredibly wide cross-section of Milwaukee music. From electro-pop performer Luxi to Field Report leader Chris Porterfield, Galápados finds Paper Holland’s music recontextualized in a variety of different sonic settings. Fatty Acids member and Galápagos engineer Josh Evert takes the Abbey Road homage “Milpool” and turns it into a uniquely quirky indie pop tune. 2019 Backline recipient Klassik takes the tropical “Sea [Sic]” and remakes it in a way that only he could, adding new colors to the track’s already vibrant palette. “Think” is given an understated re-arrangement by lo-fi indie outfit Cairns, turning the usually upbeat track into a vibey slice of pseudo-trip hop. Even Versio Curs, who largely stay faithful to the original arrangement of “Darwinian Age”, give the track a boost of urgency, playing it with a confidence and energy that nearly rivals the original.

Galápados will see a digital release on July 20, with the band celebrating the event at The Cooperage, alongside Shle Berry and Immortal Girlfriend. All Bandcamp sales of the album will go to benefit Arte Para Todos.
